Book Review We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
Hello people of the BookTube Planet! I'm Omaima and this is Book Squad! We are Sinclairs. No one is needy.
No one is wrong. We live, at least in the summertime, on a private Island off the coast of Massachusetts. Perhaps that is all you need to know.
Except that some of us are liars. This is a review of WE WERE LIARS by E. Lockheart If you haven't read the book, stop watching this video right now, I'm serious. This next part includes a huge amount of spoilers! WE WERE LIARS is told from the point of view of Cadence; a member of the Sinclair Family who are wealthy enough to have their own island where they spend each summer.
Other than being rich, the Sinclairs are known for maintaining an image for the public. They tend to hide their emotions just to appear all tough in front of people like Cadence's mother who always tells her to get hold of herself, be normal and not cause a scene even in the most difficult times. On the other hand, the liars; Cadence, Mirren, Johnny and Gat aren't happy with the situation of the family because their parents are fighting over the inheritance. As a result, the liars decide to burn down the house so that their parents don't have anything to fight over and that leads to the shocking twist at the end and let me tell you; I didn't see it coming AT ALL!! They all die except for Cadence but she has trouble remembering what happened exactly and she starts seeing their ghosts.
Something I want to clear out of the way; their plan to burn down the house was the stupidest plan EVER. Why put a person on each floor?! That's definitely not going to end well. Use Google! YouTube! Anything!! Also, I didn't fully understand where the term "liars" came from. I mean, since it is the title of the book, I figure it must be a cornerstone of the story but the reason wasn't clear for me.
And I wasn't really moved by the love story between Cadence and Gat but let's be honest, I'm not moved by any love story. At the end, you start to put all pieces of the puzzle together and you'll be like: ooh! So that's why Cadence was the only one interacting with the rest of the liars. Hold on! Is that why they didn't get her emails or any of the gifts that she sent them? I really liked the author's love for details like the island map and the family tree which really came in handy at first because it was hard to keep track of all the characters. It was totally different from what I have been reading recently.
The writing is too intense to comprehend so it's definitely not a fast and light read. This book is so beautifully written and full of metaphors; most of them you don't realize they Are metaphors until you complete reading like this line that Cadence says after her father moves out of their house, she says: "Then he pulled out a handgun and shot me in the chest" You're like: wait a minute; did the heroine of the story just die in the first part of the book? Then, you're like: oh! It's a metaphor. Something I really liked was the variations or the short stories that Cadence wrote. I liked how they reflect the story from different angles.
Eventually, WE WERE LIARS isn't a beginner's book but if you are an intermediate, it'll be fine. After reading it, I give this book four stars. I found some great words, like:
Suboptimal- Masquerading- Kleptomaniac How about you tell us the meaning of these words down below? Let me know your thoughts and opinions about this book in the comment section and if anyone asks you about the plot of this book, just lie: D. And like always, keep your friends close and your books closer..
