Color Alive Review- Coloring Book Come to Life!

- Hi.
- We're Rainy Day Dreamers. - We were just at our corner store and found the coolest thing. We had to buy some, bring them home, try them out, and show you. It's the Crayola Color
Alive Coloring Book.

Rainy Day Dreamers  Rainy Day Dreamers  These are coloring books,
what's so cool about that? While using their app,
the things that you draw on the pages, supposedly, actually, sort of, come to life. They actually appear on
your phone or on your tablet and fly around. There's a special color
to activate effects. It's a virtual thing, combined with good, old-fashioned coloring books.

Each of these was about
six and a half dollars. If you can show the back, please, it shows you briefly what
you need to do here. There are several other models of these coloring books available too. If I can find them online, I'll put a link down below this video.

What did you guys think when we saw these over at the Walgreen's store? - I thought they were
like, "Awesome, dude." Although, I haven't used a
coloring book in a few years. - Long time, what'd you think? - I thought it looked pretty cool. It reminded me a bit of the Mi World. - Right, the Mi World little model stores.

We assembled that, then with the app, you can actually see the person with the giant rolling cookie and stuff, remember, in the Mrs. Field's? It's fun, it adds a dimension to it. This is for ages four and up. They are coloring books
with regular pictures, but some special crayon in each set.

This one has pixie dust
to unlock the virtual effect. This one has showstopper. We have our Barbie and
we have our fairies, right? Now, here's the thing with it. It's a coloring book, should
cost like a dollar and a half.

Costs six and a half dollars because of the app that works with it. We were very disappointed to find out it did not work on the Moto G, did not work on the Kindle Fire HD, did not work on the ZTE ZMax, did not work on the Galaxy Nexus. We tried all of these and we're, "Oh my gosh, is it gonna work?" Or on my laptop with Windows Eight. There's a very short list
of devices it will work with, and it won't even let you download it if you're not on the compatible list.

In amongst our menagerie
of electronic devices, we do have two that work. We have, for the Android,
the Nexus Five, and we have on the
Apple side, the iPhone 4S. We've got the app
running on both of these. Kids are gonna do a little coloring, then we'll show you how this works.

Inside of the coloring book,
there's page one. There's also the section where
you take out the crayons. An interesting thing right here, you have to put your special
crayon there and scan it. Here are the crayons that come with Ximena's coloring book.

Do you recognize any of the colors? - [Ximena] Yeah, I recognize most of them. - [Parris] All right,
Ximena, let's pick out the magic pixie dust crayon. Put it there, then we'll
grab one of the phones and do the scan. Here in the instructions, in the bottom left there's
a 4D that you tap on to bring your character
to life in the page.

In the bottom right, you click on that to unlock the special color effects. Okay, we're good, go
ahead and click on play. You've pointed at the
page, it becomes aware. Now you have your special
effects you wanna tap on, down on the bottom right.

We need to put your crayon
where you can scan it. Do you see a code, like a bar code? Maybe it wants that. Still didn't like it. - [Ximena] We're back
to where we were before.

- [Parris] Took a little
doing, you have to get it just right, but, finally, it
recognized the magic crayon, and the special effect is unlocked. To get started, use your
special effect color on your coloring page. Scan with your device. How's it feel to be back
coloring again, Ximena? - [Ximena] Weird.

- [Parris] Have you tried
your magical crayon? Cuz it may fly up out of your hand. We're ready to see what happens when we put the app over that. Roxana's finishing up, Ximena
is done with her picture. Turned out very nice.

We're now gonna try to bring it to life. You got the app running here
on the Nexus Five. Hmm, it should wake, oh there, you got the 4D down in the corner. Tap on it.

- [Roxana] I just
remembered she also needs to scan my crayon as
well, cuz she used ... - Wow, is that on your-- is that supposed to be on your page? Is that your character that you drew? - [Ximena] Yes.
- [Parris] Wow. - Did it match the colors? - [Ximena] Yes, they even
put in the highlight! - [Parris] The red hair, the yellow top, the pinkish-purple skirt. Wow, that's amazing.

It won't go off the page,
right, if you move it around, it won't go off the page? Try movin' over to the
left towards Roxana. Yep, she'll only stay over
the page that you drew her on. So, you tap on her, does she do anything? What was that? - [Ximena] The little
thing I drew with it. - [Parris] There's another creature? Oh, a butterfly or somethin'.

- [Ximena] A ladybug.
- [Parris] A ladybug, wow. You can take a picture of this
with the snap button. You can then send it out
on Instagram or wherever else, so, if you can catch her
doin' somethin' interesting. - [Ximena] Can I save it? - [Parris] Sure, try that too.

Oh, you saved the character
to play with later, wow? - [Ximena] The name I'm thinking of, I don't know why, but I'm just thinking, Abigail. Even in the picture, I put it like, the dress in dark shade in the back, but light shade in the front,
and it even shows that. - [Parris] Can you do this,
get the character on there, then click snap for a picture? I wonder where it went. - [Ximena] There.

- [Parris] Then, what
buttons have you got? - [Ximena] Retake, cancel, and save. - [Parris] Save it, if you would. We can send that out on Instagram. Pretty amazing.

What happened here, you
switched the camera. Whoa, it's flyin' around. Ximena, you got it off the page. Wherever you have the camera looking, you'll see her flying there.

Did she land on the camera?
- [Ximena] Yeah, for a moment. - [Parris] Is it aware of flat
surfaces like that, I wonder. Pretty interesting, where's
the little ladybug? Can you tap and bring the ladybug in? There you go. - [Ximena] Look, you can see the sparkles.

- [Parris] We're gonna try
this with a page that's not colored, and see if
it'll actually come to life. Hit the 4D, if you would. Wonder if it doesn't want to,
since it hasn't been colored. It refuses to play with you.

You think that's it, Ximena?
- Mm-hm. - [Parris] What's the crayon
with the magic things? Oh no, look at, all gray like a ghost. That's a little scary.
- [Ximena] I know. - [Parris] That's what happens
when you don't color it.

It will still create it. I think that's why the crayon was there, to remind you, hey, you
might wanna color this first. That's funny, Roxana, take a look. - [Roxana] That's a little bit creepy.

- [Parris] Okay, Roxana, your
picture turned out very nice. Let's see if you can activate the app. This is on the iPhone 4S. It's thinkin'.

You colored it so well, it doesn't realize it's one of its own pictures. There ya go, now go
back to your picture. You still have 4D, go ahead and tap 4D. Here we go.

- [Roxana] I have a bad feeling. - [Parris] That you're gonna
have a dinosaur on it? - [Roxana] Yep. - [Parris] Oh, no, I wonder
how it knew from the start, and it's all gray. Roxana colored her picture so well, they don't believe a 4-year-old did it.

We couldn't get the iPhone 4S
to recognize Roxana's picture. Ximena's gonna try it here
with the Nexus Five, see if it can understand
what's goin' on. Roxana, what did you do
that made it not recognize it? Okay, Ximena has colored another picture. Go ahead and bring it to life with 4D.

That's pretty good,
look at the color match. A little different in the skirt. - [Ximena] It's cuz I made
it a bit messy. I did that purple streak in there.

- [Parris] If you tap, what
extra character flies in? There's no extra character in this one? I thought the broom might appear. Tap her again. - [Ximena] She just does
a spell or something. - [Parris] I see, well,
each picture, I guess, has somethin' different,
that makes it interesting.

That's the Color Alive Coloring Books. I bet you liked it cuz yours worked. I bet you didn't like
it cuz it didn't work. - No, but I did get a really
good picture out of it.

- Nice coloring, but too nice, I guess. They didn't anticipate
4-year-olds coloring. You must've covered up some lines that it uses as an identifier, to recognize what the picture is, so it didn't know what it was. - What I noticed was
that, in all the figures, everything had a thin line, except the Barbie.

The doll had a thick line around them. - So you confused it, somehow,
by coloring that? We don't know, that's too bad, Roxana put all the time
into coloring this, but she can do one just kinda messily, then she'll get to have
it work in hers too. There's about how many pages
in the coloring book? There's gotta be about 20 pictures? - Fifteen, I think. - What did you think? Do you think this is a good Easter basket stuffing kind of thing to get some kids? - Yes.
- Definitely.

- They loved it. The one thing I'll tell you is, if you're thinking to get this, you need to make sure that
your device, your phone, is actually on the list
of what's gonna work. As I mentioned, most of ours didn't work. Down below this video,
I will put the link, Roxana found the page that tells you exactly which devices will work with this.

I'll also put a link to the
product if I can find it.
