How to Solve a Rubik's Cube - Easy Method!!

What's up Youtube my name is Kenneth today I'm gonna teach you how to solve a Rubik's Cube in this tutorial I'm gonna show you a seven step layer by layer beginner's method that isn't too hard but if you memorize it it will give you a good foundation for learning a speed method in the future but before we get to that let's go over the different name of the different types of pieces your cube has first we have the center pieces the center pieces have a single color and although they twist they don't actually move positions meaning you can't swap two center pieces now looking here at a disassembled cube it kinda becomes obvious that the pieces are actually stuck into positions and they don't actually move positions although they do spin the thing to remember about the centers is that the center defines that sides color so as you can see here we have a red center and that mean this whole side will be red when the cube is solved second we have the edge pieces now here is an edge piece and each edge piece has two colors and the way to figure out where an edge belongs is by looking at the colors this edge piece belong between its yellow and blue centers so we can see here we have it align the yellow center and there we go now it's now in the right place because it's between the yellow and the blue centers and finally we have the corner pieces the corner pieces have three colors and they belong next to their colors centers so we can see this on has blue white and red and belong between the red white and blue centers so it's in the right place now that we've talked about the pieces let's quickly go over the notations notations at first might seen bit confusing but don't worry it isn't using the notation we can write down algorithms and we can share them it makes it a lot easier and your find a list of the algorithms I'm using in this video down in the description below so for the notation each side of the cube has a letter that correspond with that side so the letters are R for right F for front L for left U for up B for back and D for down when you see a letter that mean turn that side clockwise so this mean turn the up face clockwise now when you see a letter with the prime symbol next to it that mean turn that side counter clockwise so this means turn the right side counter clockwise and finally if you see the number 2 behind a letter that means turn that side twice so what does this means to do yep it means turn the left side twice 180 degrees now before we begin just a quick word of advice I recommend practicing each step until you've got it down before proceeding to the next one and to help with that I've add these annotations on the right side so that you can either jump ahead to the next step or you can jump back to the previous one alright time to start first we're gonna start with step one and we're gonna solve the cross and for a lot of people solving the cross can be something that you can do just with intuition and you can just do by practicing it and doing it yourself but what we're gonna try to do is we're gonna try to solve the red cross and I like starting with the red side a lot of people like starting with the white or green but I like using red and it might be good for you guys to do the same just for the sake of this tutorial when we're done we're gonna have a red cross that looked kinda like this except for we're gonna have these pieces matching with their centers so you can see this one matches this one matches but look this one doesn't and this one doesn't so even though it looks right here we're not quite there yet so what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna show you guys an easy way to get it right every time and the way we're gonna do that is we're gonna break it up into two sub steps the first part of this step is we're gonna try to get all the red edges up here around the opposite centers so opposite of red we have orange so we're gonna try to get all the red edges up around the centers and as we can see there's this one here and it can be put up here very easily all we have to do is do this right move and it get it up here perfect so now we go around and we look for another red edge so OK here we go have red green and to get that up here next to the orange is pretty easy we can just do that OK let's look for another one oh look we got another easy one that's perfect and so if we're like this and we want to put this red one up here that's no problem right we just turn it up here but you can see look we're hurting this one we don't wan to hurt that one so we want to find a free slot so we can turn up side so that we have a free slot and now when we turn this red one up we're not gonna hurt any of these two OK we're all set perfect now let's look for another one so you can see we have another one and it's down at the bottom and that's not that difficult because you can just turn it up to the top but remember we don't want to hurt one that we already have so before we turn it to the top we should find a free slot that goes right above it and then we can turn it up to the top perfect so let me show you guys a couple other cases you might have that might be a little bit difficult OK here is a case that might be a little more difficult to get this red yellow one up to the top we have to flip it right so to do that what we can do is we can just turn it to the side right and we can move it to the top this way but of course we don't want to hurt this one so we have to move an empty slot above it and we can fill the slot with our piece there perfect so now let's find the last red edge we can see it's right here now you might want to be tempted to move it up to the top but obviously that didn't help and we broke a piece already there so we're gonna first move a free slot above it and then we can move it to the top and obviously this is a step we just saw so to fix it we can you know turn to the side first and then we can move it up but oh we don't want to hurt this one so we have to first move the open slot above it and we can now turn this red edge up to the top there we go we've got the first half of this step now that we've done the first half we've done the hard part of the step now for the easy part so what we want to do is we want to match this green red edge with it's green center obvious it's not it's match with the blue one right now so what we do is we can turn the bottom two layer until we've match the green edge so now that it's matched with the green center we can then do a 180 degree turn to put that red edge on the bottom and you can see now we have the red edge connected to the red center and as well as the green center so the red green edge is in the correct place so now we can just move it up to the top layer again and do it with the next red edge so we have red blue so we can just move these bottom two layers until the blue matches up which it just did and then once they matched we can then turn the red 180 degrees so we have the red blue edge match between the red blue centers and time to do the next one and you can see we're already set this red one right yellow is already matched with it's yellow center so we can turn that side 180 degrees and now we have it matched up and we've go the red and yellow between the red and yellow centers alright the last one we have red and white so we have to turn the bottom two layers until we have white matched up if it hadn't matched up you can just keep turning until you had it matched now that we have the red white matched with the white center we can turn it 180 degrees and now we've match the red white edge between the red white centers and as you can see now we've have our red cross and it's completely complete because we have it matching with the centers as well now we're done with step one and we can move on to step two so here we are at step two and in step two we want to solve the red corners to complete the bottom layer so what we want to do is we want to find a red corner in the top layer that we can then find to put in the bottom layer as you can see we have our red corner here it's red blue and yellow so what we want to do is we want to move this corner above directly where it belongs and so you can see this red blue and yellow belongs between the red blue and yellow center so it belongs right here what you want to to is you want to hold it like this so that if you turn the corner down it will be in the right place but as you see if we did that we'll hurt a red edge so obviously we don't want to do that instead what we want to do is let's move the red corner out of the way so that we can move this edge up and then we can match our red corner with the red edge and then place it back down that way we get our corner in the right place so let's find another corner and we can do the same thing so back in the top layer is there any other red corners here's one it's got red blue and white so where does that belong let's move the bottom two layers until we find where that belongs and we see it belongs right here between the red white and the blue centers so this corner belongs straight down here and if we just move it straight down obviously that will hurt this edge as well as this corner and so instead what we can do is we can move it towards the center out of the way bring this edge up and we can swing the corner back in next to the edge and bring that back down and that will solve our corner and we can continue to do that until all four corners are solved and you can see we're lucky all four are done already so let me show you guys a couple other cases alright here's a couple more cases you can see here we have the red yellow and green corners we can put that right above where it belongs so we can see it belong right down here between the red green and yellow centers so to get that piece down here we can't get that red piece facing us because it's facing straight up and this seem like a very difficult position but we can actually get around this pretty easily by just doing this we can turn the right side and then move this top layer twice and then it kicks that corner to the side so it's facing us now but then we have to replace our red edge and put it back down so we don't hurt anything so now that this red corner is out and it's facing us we can solve it like we did before we can put it right above where it belongs and we could turn it down here like this but of course that hurt our edge so the way we solve it is we move it towards the center out of the way we can bring this edge up we can then move the corner into position with that edge and bring them back down to solve our corner perfect now let's find another one so you can see here's another one we have red white and blue and we position that right above where it belongs and you can see it belongs down here and this time when the red is facing us it's on the right side and so even though it looks like it's different it's just the same just mirrored and so instead we can't turn it down like this but instead we have to move it towards the center out of the way we can bring the edge up like this so that we can turn the corner back next to the edge and then bring it down that's how we can solve that corner and now are there any more corners on the top layer that are red doesn't look like it but we can see that this corner is already down here but it's been twisted it's not in position so how do we solve that well the way to do it is you just imagine that this corner has red on it and we can put this corner down here and it will pop this corner out and so how do we put this corner down here well first we will move it out of the way move this edge up put the corner in and bring it down and that will put that the corner in here and it pop the red corner out of the way so we can redo the same move so here we go this red piece needs to go down here we would turn it down but of course that hurt these we don't want to do that so we turn the top layer and move it towards the center out of the way then we can bring the edge up so that we can put the corner next to the edge and bring it down solving the layer so now we can see we have the whole bottom layer solved not only do we have the red side done we can see we have the layer done these ones are the same color and they match it's centers that's how you know you're done with step two so here we are at step three and in step three we're gonna solve the middle layer so now that we have the bottom layer done we're gonna do the middle layer and basically all the middle layers is is these four pieces that my fingers are on once we get these four pieces we'll have the first two layers done and we'll be done with step three so to find a piece that belongs in the second layer we can look at the top layer and we look for piece that doesn't have orange in it and if a piece doesn't have orange in it it belong in the second layer so this one has orange on it this one has orange on it this one does not have orange on it so what we're gonna want to do is we wanna match this color with it's center so let's just turn the bottom two layers here we go that's easy now we have the white piece on the white center and now we look at the other color we have blue and we try to see what side does that belong on does that belong on this side or this side well yeah it belong on this side right because this side has blue on it and it belong between the white and blue center so if the piece needs to go to the right that means we have to do this algorithm and it's not too difficult hold it like this so that this center is here at the front and we do this algorithm it's U R U' R' then U' F' U F. And that solves our edge and puts it in place so now it's time to find another edge in the top that does not have orange so let's see this one has orange this one has orange this one has orange what this one has orange too if all four have orange what do we do well it's pretty easy we find an edge that is in the middle layer but isn't correctly solved so this one is solved this one is solved this one is not solved and this one is not solved what we'll do is we'll just use our algorithm that move this edge into here and we'll do that now and it will pop this edge out to the top and then we can go on to solve that edge so here we go let's do this same algorithm to put this edge into here and we're gonna use the same algorithm it's U R U' R' then U' F' U F. That put that edge here but it also pop out this edge so now we can solve this edge so what do we do we look for the edge on the top layer that doesn't have orange in it and we match this color with it's center there we go it's match with green and then we just determine what side this color goes on so yellow does it belong over here no because this is white it belongs over here so because it has to go to the left we do this algorithm instead it's U' L' U L. Then U F U' F' that solves that edge so now we look again in the top for an edge that doesn't have orange in it this one has orange that one does not have orange then we match this edge with this color with it's center and you can see it's already matched with green but if it wasn't we can just keep turning until it does and then we determine what side it needs to go to does it needs to go to the left no it needs to go to the right it needs to go to the right we use the first algorithm and that's U R U' R' U' F' U F.

And that puts in the edge so now we have all four edges and this step is complete we've done the first two layers of the cube so here we are at step four and we're going to orient the edges on the top layer and what that mean is we're gonna make it so each edge on the top layer has orange facing up as you can see these two already have orange facing up but these two don't and so we're going to use a very easy simple algorithm that will move these edges around so that we can put orange facing up and so what we want to do is we want to use this algorithm and it's just F R U R' U' F' and what we want to do is we want to get the edges so you have two that are solved and two that are not and that's our target so we're already at our target right now and when you're at the target you want to make it so the two that aren't solve are in the front and in the back just like this and then we can do our algorithm and it will orient these two edges and it will complete this step so it's just F R U R' U' F' and you can see we've done that but I'm gonna show you guys a couple more cases you might see so you might see it like this where there's no edges that are already done for you and we're not yet at our target so if you see this case it doesn't matter how you hold the cube we just have to do the easy algorithm and it's F R U. R' U' F' so now you can see we have two edges that are done now if there are two edges done adjacent to each other like this that mean hold the cube like this so that one is to the right and one is to the front then you can just do that easy algorithm and that's F R U. R' U' F' and here you can see we're at our target we have two that are done and two that are not done and they're across from each other so remember we want to hold it like this and do the easy algorithm and it's just F R U. R' U' F' and now we've got the edges oriented on the top layer and we're done with step four so here we are at step five we wanna orient the last layers corners so you can see we have two corners that already have orange on top but we wanna make these corners have orange on top as well and so what we're gonna do is we're gonna use a pretty easy algorithm and what this algorithm does is it actually twist three of these corners twist this one clockwise this one clockwise and this one clockwise and so what we wanna do is we want to hold it in a way so that we get to our target position and our target position will have only one orange corner facing up so here we have two orange corners facing up that's not our target and we want to put it to the target so if we hold it like this you can see that this corner won't move this corner will turn clockwise it will make it so this one goes away the orange will go away this one will turn clockwise and the orange will go to here facing away and this one will turn clockwise and will be facing away and all four corners will be facing away and that's not what we want so we don't want to hold it like this so let's try it like this so if we do it this way this corner won't move this corner will turn clockwise and move away this corner will turn clockwise and it will solve this corner and will orient this corner this one will move away if we do that then we'll have only one corner facing up and that's our target that's what we want to do so we want to hold the puzzle like this when we do this next algorithm and this algorithm is not too difficult it's just R' U2 R U.

R' U R. As you can see now we have one corner that is oriented properly and three that are not and that's our target so what we want to do is we want to hold it like this so that this corner is in the bottom right and the three that are not done are in the top right top left and the front left now we just repeat the algorithm and the algorithm was R' U2 R U. R' U R. As you can see it looks like nothing happened but we're still at our target so we just have to do the algorithm again and remember to hold it like this so the solved corner is in the front right OK let's do the algorithm again it's R' U2 R U.

R' U R. As you can see now we have all the corners oriented and now we're done with step five so here we are at step six we're gonna permute the corners of the last layer and what that means is we're gonna move the corners around so that all the corners are in their correct position we've already oriented them meaning all the corner have orange facing up and now we just have to put them in the right place so if we look around we can try to find two that are already next to each other are these next to each other no aha we have two next to each other we have two blue corners that are already in the right place and a lot of time we call this "headlights" so we have two blue headlights so if you have two that are already done put those two facing away from you so the headlights are facing away and then we can do this algorithm and the algorithm is R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2 as you can see that fix all the corners all the corners are now in the correct position let me show you guys the only other case you might see so here's the other case you might see and as we turn the side looking for two headlights we can see that there're no headlights none of the corners are in the right place if you ever get to this positions it doesn't matter how you hold the cube you just have to do the algorithm and the algorithm again is this it's R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2 now we can look for headlights so are these headlight no no no hey there we go we got two white headlights so we want to face that away from us facing away and we can redo that algorithm the algorithm again is R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2 and that fix our corners alright great now we're done with step six and it's time to start the last step so for step seven we want to permute the last layers edges and we have an algorithm that will cycle this edge this edge and this edge so what we want to do is get the cube in this target position with one edge completed we wanna face that edge away from us then we can do this algorithm and all the algorithm is is R U' R U. R U R U' R' U' R2 and it looks like we didn't do anything but what we did was we got it one step closer so now when we cycle these three edges this edge is going to move to here this edge will move to here this edge will move over to there and that's exactly what we need so let's go ahead and do the algorithm again so it's R U' R U. R U R U' R' U' R2 look at that we've solve this cube there're couple other cases you might see so let's go over those so you might get to a case where you're not in your target position meaning you don't have one edge already done for you if that's the case it doesn't matter how you hold the cube as long as the orange side is facing up you can just go ahead and do the algorithm the algorithm again is R U' R U.

R U R U' R' U' R2 now no matter what you'll have one edge that's solved and now we're in our target position we put the solved edge in the back so that it's just these three that need to cycle and we do our algorithm again it's R U' R U. R U R U' R' U' R2 congratulations to you if you solve your first Rubik's Cube it feels really good to solve it and if you haven't yet definitely stick with it and hopefully you'll get it if you're wandering what to do next definitely check out some of my other videos I have videos on why the Rubik's Cube is so hard I have videos on how to make cool patterns and I've got a new series that's just about to start where it'll be interactive and you guys can race me and everybody else it'll be a lot of fun alright guys thanks for watching I do come out with videos at least every other weekends and sooner we'll start a weekly series that's call "let's race" hope you guys enjoy it thanks for watching and of course have a great day :).
