HOW TO WIN AT LIFE The Winner Effect by Ian H. RobertsonAnimated Book ReviewSummary
What if I told you that when you win at anything
in life, your mind and body reshapes and gives you a biological advantage in the next competition? It's true -- Professor Ian H. Robertson talks
about this in his book: "The Winner Effect, The Neuroscience of Success and Failure." If you've ever done something such as win
against a lesser opponent in sparring for boxing, or if you've ever done something like
quizzing yourself and getting all the answers right before a test, then you know how small
victories can boost your confidence. There is a biological response to victory
where we see a jump in testosterone, which is known to increase your sex drive, your
confidence, and your ability to take risks. To use this advantage, Mike Tyson and Don
King set him up for very easy fights after he just got released from prison.
Instead of going up against a huge opponent
first, he would boost his testosterone by winning first, and would be more prepared
going into a title fight, which he won. There was another study done on male fish
in East Africa where there were T fish, which were very colorful, highly attractive and
well endowed vs. NT fish, grey in color, submissive, and infertile. What we see in the beginning is a very simple
idea that many of us have, that some are born to win and some are born to lose.
However, something strange happens: when an
NT fish takes over territory, he miraculously changes from grey to fluorescent yellow, his
brain swells to 8 times its previous size, its testes increase in size, females are attracted,
and his former NT companions run away. This shows the crazy effect that winning can
have. We see such transformations in a select few
humans that take it upon themselves to work on their mind and body -- the ectomorphs that
became huge and the overweight that became healthy. Rather than blaming genetics, we will see
how you can change your environment and habits to make yourself a winner, rather than relying
on the world to give you a pass.
As we saw in the NT fish, not only did their
bodies change, but their mind as well. On Wall Street it is known that those with
more testosterone make more money as they are more aggressive. They are pushy for deals and are willing to
take risks due to this. Not only are the hormones there for now, but
later on, the subconscious mind will say that I have won in the past through different scenarios,
so in this new challenge, I should be able to win.
Actually succeeding allows the brain to make
a positive feedback loop. Because you have won in the past, you believe
that you will win again. This leads to more victories, more trainings,
and overall, a winner. Being a winner isn't only about making others
feel nervous around you, winners enjoy the benefits of power which is more intelligence,
creativity, and focus on their goals.
Next we will be going over how to cultivate
this change in both your body and your brain. So you want to start winning in life? And who wouldn't? If you're a 40 year old overweight man who
lives in his parents' basement, then you have nothing to lose. If you're not him, you're better off to begin
with and this will take less time. The main thing that I realized from my own
thoughts as well as from this book is that you have to take action.
Whatever you want to win at, you have to take
small, incremental steps to a long-term vision. This means setting yourself for a goal, reverse-engineering
it, and each day getting something accomplished (winning). This can be going up to 3 girls a day at the
beginning and forcing yourself to get at least 1 phone number, which is actually the easiest
thing in the world. Then slowly progressing to 10 a day, and 15
a day, to even 50.
That number may seem like something that you'd
never want to do, but if you start with 3 a day, then you will slowly become more confident
in social interactions and use that to keep progressing. The same idea can be applied in working out,
starting a business, anything. The reason why this works is that your brain
doesn't like bullshit. A lot of times we hear that we should just
tell ourselves that we are winners, but the brain needs proof.
If we were like me last year, I was sleeping
4 hours a day, jacking off twice a day, and the only thing going for me was business,
then obviously I would have no confidence outside of business no matter what I told
myself. Action works. Another idea which can also be applied is
just changing your body-language. If you behave in a certain way, speak in a
certain way, and hold that, then you will be more respected and possibly see results
faster.
This means having good posture, speaking from
your chest slowly, and spreading out. I will be making a video covering this in
the future. Finally, despite me trashing on just changing
your mindset, this is a crucial part of the game. While action in my opinion is very important
by itself, mindset must be added for real growth.
It's about a growth mindset. Some students have a hopeless mindset, where
whatever test they are given, they blame their own intelligence by saying that they aren't
"smart enough." The growth mindset students said that the
test was harder this time, that they didn't study, and that if they did put in the effort,
they could have done well. In this case, you know and believe that if
you put in the work, you will do better. Same with if you're going up to people and
talking.
Some will be rejected and automatically just
stop trying rather than saying that they are a pretty tight clique, I'll go up to someone
else. Developing this mindset takes time and effort,
as well as action. You can't expect your brain to believe you
unless you give it proof. Working on this and applying these lessons
will give you a tremendous edge on your competition, as well as your former self.
To conclude, the Winner Effect is where your
body, as well as your mind changes due to victory, leading to more and more victories,
confidence, testosterone, and focus. The main reason we read is to learn and apply
these lessons, so to become a winner, you have to go through small incremental steps
to whatever you want in life to have more confidence in larger situations and so that
you can grow. You also need to develop a mindset that allows
you to move past obstacles with work, rather than chalking it up to your genes, which we
saw in the NT and T fish where they did not matter as much as we'd think. It's your choice of whether you want to complain,
or if you want to change your life for the better.
